New Infineon Chipset to Be Used in Ultra Value-Line Phones
July 28, 2005
In the first half of 2006 mobile phone makers could be putting ultra value-line mobile phones into mass production using a newly developed chip platform by Infineon. These phones will have basic voice and SMS functions and the Infineon chip platform will cut the number of components to less than 100, whereas current models use 150 to 200 components. This frees up extra space for the battery, which will improve standby and talking time. Costs for these phones will be under US$20, which is significantly lower than the cost for current value-line mobile phones, which stands at approximately US$35. These phones will be targeted at the 3.5 billion people who live in areas with mobile phone coverage but do not have the means to buy a phone.
